A '3v3' level TST Session : The Absolute Basics
A TST session is split up into 5 components
-
1. Spend a couple of minutes on TST homework. [Developing foot-shapes]. Remind players that this is their homework, and they should be using the flip books & online resource to improve the quality of their touch.
-
4. Play a game that forces players to use space, think ahead and play well off the ball. This might be 2-square or a '2v2 with 4 bounce players' type game
2. Footwork
-
All footwork should have a place in the tech games / small sided games. If footwork isn't game functional, or isn't a stepping stone to game functionality them don't do it.
3. 1v1 Tech games :
-
Building a players ability to deal with pressure (1v1s, 2v1s etc), include a control touch and a release and this should be a stepping stone to the small sided games. Also teach players to make angles when off the ball, and to play with an open body position.
5.3v3s.
These should always be a factor in a TST session.
- For players who cannot pass and control the ball using the inside of the foot, you will need to work really hard on their foot shapes (on opening the foot). Receiving and passing the ball should natural be a part of a tech game.
- Advance players should be doing this at speed.
- Intensity : Head Up : Body Shape : Angles : Should always be a factor somewhere in the session.
Footwork and Tech Games
The footwork and tech games can be blended together, but the SSGs will always be last exercise.
Tech Games vs SSGs
The tech games cannot be the same as or more complex than the small sided games (2v2 or 3v3).
TST Footwork : A quick snapshot
Ball Mastery
- Ball Mastery - can be used as a stepping stone exercise to FFPs.
- Use flipbook foot-shape exercises -> touch type exercises that develop inside and outside touches for beginner players.
- All TST players, once they have been here a term or two, should find these basic footshape touches execises very easy.

- Scissor
- Fake kicks / passes
- Steps around the ball
- Fake turns (stop starts / double turns)
The above are base level FFPs.
They can be improvised upon as players advance. The key is always to ask when doing footwork : 'Does the footwork develop foot dexterity and touch, and are they essential to the rest of the session, and will they be used in the SSG component of the session?'.
Also note :
- Footwork needs to done in a fun and interesting way. If you do boring exercises or the same thing each week, players will get bored and stop developing.

Snapshot : Tech games
Simply put :
- Tech games simply help players manipulate their time and space to improve the position of the ball.
- Pass and press games with 2 goals (left and right) are a great simple way to develop the ability to use the left and right space when getting pressed. They develop face on skills, as well as turns etc.
- We also need to teach 'individual intelligence, which includes ' off the ball movement, positioning and awareness'. [2 -square is a great game for this].

Snapshot : Small Sided Games
All that is done prior to the small sided games must be about playing the small sided games better.
If it doesn't help with this then don't do it.

Juggling
Can be done but is not a main part of the curriculum ; Maybe do when switching exercises and you need to waste a couple of minutes while setting up he next drill. Make it level appropriate. Use drop kick catch : Use bounces : etc. On hot days make jugging a bigger part of the session. Older players would do jugggling patterns or SVB.
