This is the Full Session Plan for players who at the 2v2 level :

Very low intermediates & beginners

Usually the session plan below will be for 5,6 and 7 year olds, but even some older players may benefit from more fun based exercises, where the technique is hidden in the activities.

Key Notes :

  • Step one : Break a 90 minute session into 5 x 15 minute parts, with drinks breaks in between.
  • Use a RwB : 2v1 : 1v1 : 2v2 model
  • Make sure over the course of a session these core skills have been covered :

[ Control the ball : Run with the ball : pass the ball : move to a position ] Head up : Decision

Part #1

Running with the ball based games + Head up / Decision

  • Scarecrow and Zombie (can develop the concept of move to space, protect the ball, turn away from pressure)

Possible Coaching Points

  • Keep the ball Close
  • Keep the head up to check space and pressure
  • Find and move to space the space
  • Protect the ball and move away from pressure.

Part #2

  • Quick recap of TST FFSs
    • Just very quickly go through some basic FFS exercises.

  • Develop :
    • Ability to interact with the ball.
    • Hoping ability
    • Co-ordination

Really young players may not get any farther than this.

Part #3

TST 2v1 : Pass and Press : 2 (Attackers) v 1 (Defender) : 2 goals

  • Attackers hold their space and move forward when possible
  • Attackers must pass with open foot.
  • Attackers must control with open foot
  • Defenders can't press until attacker #1 has touched it.
  • Attackers have a goal each (and can't score in the other attackers goal).
  • You teach the player on the ball that they either score or pass, based on what the defender does.
  • You teach the player off the ball to hold their position (you could be really clever with this).

Part #4

Pass and Press : 1v1s with 2 goals

  • Attackers must pass with open foot.
  • Attackers must control with open foot
  • Defenders can't press until attacker has touched it.
  • Attackers must accelerate sideways as the defender gets close
  • Attackers must turn if defender blocks off the goal
  • Attackers must shoot when the goal is open.
  • You can add constraints to the game (squares around the goal) to change the emphasis of the exercise.

Part #5

Play 2v2s

  • Keep most of the TST rules....  so they learn them early
  • (winner stays on if 6 players )

Do not play 3v3s at this age.

There are TST rules for these games :

  • Players can run the ball in if it goes out.
  • Players can't score from their own half.
  • The ball must stay low at all times. If ball goes above 'knee height'. Offense 1 is a free kick. Offense 2 is a goal to the other team. [Encourage technical play - not booting the ball].
  • Forcing rule : If you shoot and the defender blocks it but it goes out - it becomes the defender's ball.
  • Passing rule : If a team is winning then both players must touch the ball before they can score. If both players have touched the ball but then the ball goes out of play, then this rule kicks restarts (both players must touch it before they can score).
  • You can make up your own rules if it will help the players develop better.

Note : You can change the exercises and drills (and should do, to keep it interesting - kids get bored doing the same thing all the time) but the techncial components and technical lessons (outlined above) should never change.....they are just always disguised and dressed up differently.
