[By working as a sub-contractor at TST it is assumed that before each new term you have read and agreed to the conditions below and that by coaching at TST you demonstrate that you have read and agree to abide by these conditions. This page (link) will be sent to you when you start coaching at TST and at the end/start of each term. It is up to you to keep up to date with the conditions, and any revisions].
Please note. I don't mean to be a pain in regards to these conditions. I am just trying to develop the right coaching culture. A professional coaching culture.
- Punctual.
- Reliable.
- Presentable.
- Rarely misses a session that has not been pre arranged (confirmed using email or whatsapp).
- Always coaches for a full term unless agreed otherwise.
- Communicates early if a session will be missed or has plans to leave the coaching team.
- Knows the curriculum.
I would rather have a good coach who is 100% professional, than an amazing coach who is unreliable and lacks professionalism.
These conditions have come into play as coaches in the past have not always acted professionally, and as a result have caused issues that affected the viability and quality of the program. These conditions aim to prevent these issues from happening again....[but these issues will always happen because unfortunately experience says that coaches don't read these conditions and so are very surprised and upset when they are applied[.
Make sure you have read the notes on the previous page too. The notes below are an extension of this.
Invoicing TST
- Please note that you are subcontracted to coach. That is, you are not a TST employee. You run your own coaching business and sub-contract out your coaching services. As a result you should submit an invoice* at the end of each term for the work you have done. [*i will do this for you].
- Your invoice will include your full name, contact details and ABN. [If these arent on the invoice they need to be supplied].
- It is assumed that you have an ABN. If you dont have one when you start coaching at TST then we assume you will get one, and share it with us.
- Without a 'proper' invoice we shouldn't pay you (accountants orders). Experience tells me that this is too tedious for coaches to do, so we try to make this process as painless as possible for you.
Giving notice if you leave the program.
- If you can no longer coach at TST, in the name of professionalism, you need to give as much notice as possible (at least 4 weeks - more if possible) so that there is lots of time to find a replacement for you, but note :
- The sub-contractor agreement is that you coach for a full term, unless otherwise agreed. Coaches must therefore be available throughout that term. Normal pay is conditional on coaching a full term unless otherwise agreed at the start of the term. Coaches who leave for good, mid way through a term, without sufficient 'notice or reason', will not get paid the full EHR since they did not fulfill the terms of the subcontractor arrangement.
- Coaches may get paid the Base EHR even if they gave a reasonable amount of notice (ideally 4 weeks).
- Coaches who give minimal or no notice may not get paid at all for the coaching they have done in the term. This is done on a case by case basis. But remember the contract is to coach a full term, and so the pay is also for this.
- Pay is not for the hours, sessions, days etc.
- Be professional and there will not be an issue.
- If you know at the start of term that you won't be able to coach for the full term please make this known at the start of term.
- If you can only work for part of a term, and this is made known at the start of the term, and it is agreed that this is ok, then working for part of the term is ok and no penalties will apply.
WWCC
- An up to date Working With Children Check needs to be submitted when you commence coaching at TST and when your WWCC is renewed.
- Without this you will not get paid until a current WWCC check has been supplied.
If you are sick and can't coach :
- Please try to not let me know on a Saturday morning that you have been sick all week and you thought you would be OK to coach, but in fact can't. Please give some warning that you won't be able to coach.
- If you are sick during the week, then let me know so I can at least try to get a coach on standby just in case you don't recover, or I can let parents know that we will be missing a coach and that groups will be shuffled.
- Even though you are subcontracted, established coaches will be paid (as a bonus) if a session is missed for being sick.
- (This is within reason: It should only be the odd week here and there).
- We would expect coaches to miss no more than 1 session per term (if that) on average due to not being well enough to coach.
If an established coach 'misses a session' for other reasons during the term :
- We will pay you (as a bonus) if you miss a session due to a family event, special occasion (wedding etc) as long as we know this before the start of the term. If you spring it on us half way through the term, then you will not get paid for the missed session.
- If you coach NPL and there is a NPL double header and it only applies to one coach and the player numbers are not affected much then again you might get paid for this missed session. But Note : players who miss TST due to NPL games get a credit so it is hard to pay coaches if lots of players miss the session too). If 2 or more coaches are affected, and lots of players also miss the session, then it will not be possible to pay you. So no guarantee of payment for missing a session due to NPL commitments.
- The maximum missed sessions per year, this applies to, is not set in stone. Work on the basis that you will not get paid for missing a session (for any reason), and then if you do, it is a bonus (which will be paid as part of the 'end of the year bonus').
- As a subcontractor you will not be paid for missing a session if it is for any other reason, or if there was minimal notice or if the total number of missed sessions is above a reasonable amount [up to 2 per term]. At this point we would be looking for a new coach tbh.
- If sessions are cancelled (EG : Weather) then coaches do not get paid (as there is no income with which to pay coaches) unless agreed otherwise.
- If a group needs to be cancelled because of a lack of coaches then the absent coaches will not get paid.
Going on holiday without notice, and so missing a huge chunk of the term, and so only coaching a small number of sessions during a term
- This will be done on a case by case basis but in simple terms, if you start coaching in a term but then stop coaching mid term (without this being discussed at the start of the term and agreed to) it will be treated as if you are resigning (without notice) from your position as a coach and that you agree to forego any payment for the coaching you have done during the term and forego any bonus that might be due at the end of the year.
- To get paid for the coaching done during the term before leaving, you would need to come back to the program and re commit to completing a full term of coaching as this was the agreement that that your pay was/is dependent on.
- If you want to be paid for the sessions you do coach, it is therefore critical that you communicate your plans at the start of the term, and make sure there is an agreement (in writing (whatsapp/email will do)) that it is ok to only coach for part of the term.
- These conditions will be enforced.
So please communicate your plans before the term starts to avoid not getting paid. If not getting paid will upset you, it is very simple to avoid.
End of year bonus payment.
- Subcontractors would not normally be paid for work they did not do and certainly would not get paid if they failed to fulfill the conditions of the contract. It is important that you realise that you are self employed and a subcontractor.
- In normal circumstances, failure to not meet the conditions outlined in a contract would result in not getting paid. In this regard the TST sub-contract agreement is that you 'agree to coach for a full term' unless an alternative agreement has been agreed to at the start of the term.
- Our intention is to pay established coaches for sick days (this will happen occasionally and can't be helped) and missed sessions (as long as you have let us know about these well ahead of time and it is only a small number of sessions that are missed over a year) etc. The pay for these will be 'an end of year bonus' payment.
- Also, if you are available to coach all sessions in a term, then a bonus amount will be paid that is equivalent to an additional amount applied to every hour worked.
- The 'bonus payment' will be paid at the end of the year . EG : The end of the year bonus payment for sessions missed in T4 2021 ,T1 2022,T2 2022 and T3 2022 will be paid (if applicable) at the end of Term 4 2022 (Just before Xmas).
- Note : Leaving the program without giving proper notice / acting unprofessionally in any way (punctuality, presentation, communication etc) means this bonus will not be paid.
General Uniform Rules :
- In general terms it is all black (BUT do not wear another academy uniform please).
- If you do not have appropriate black clothing please let us know and we will give you what you need.
- If you need to buy anything else specifically for the program (winter coaching jacket for example) then we will help cover the cost. Any expense in this regard will become part of the bonus payment paid at the end of the year.
Punctuality :
- Please be ready to start on time. You get paid to arrive 5 minutes before your session is due to start (you are paid for this).
- It takes 5 minutes to set up, so arriving 5 minutes before your session is the latest you should arrive. Groups should never be waiting for you. Arriving late does not reflect well on you or the program.
- So make sure you have everything set up and ready to go when the session starts.
- If you need a break – use the break between sessions, or the small sided games to grab a few minutes break (as long as there is cover for all the games).
- Note : If you are continually late it is a problem and is seen as unprofessional.
Packing up :
- Packing up is a job that would take 1 person 60 minutes to do, but gets done in 5 minutes if all coaches pitch in.
- You get paid to stay an extra 15 minutes to help pack up. So there is no excuse for not helping pack up. [Get players to help].
- Don't use this 15 minutes to chat to parents/players and then shoot off.
- Follow the rules of packing up. See below.
- If you arrive late, then please stay later to help pack up.
- Do not leave until all equipment is ready to go either through, under and over the fence.
Equipment pack up rules : Each pitch has :
- Each coaches picks a job. Once they finish their job, help another coach with theirs.
- If a coach talks to parent for 15 minutes before helping to pack up, they still need to do 15 minutes of packing up after this.
- Put 12 balls in a bag (if we have enough bags).
- Tie it with a false knot (unless it has a springy lock thoing).
- Place it next to the fence ready to be thrown over.
- Fill the weight bags (Max 4 weights per bag - More than this breaks the bags).
- Do not zip weight bags.
- Place them along the edge of the gate so they can slide under.
- Fill the Cone Bags (but don’t squash the cones into the bags).
- Zip the bag.
- Place it next to the fence, ready to be thrown over.
- Discs go in a separate bag. Don't mix cones and discs.
- Get the goals into the corner.
- Fold them, tie them, grab a handful (say 6) and slide them into a gap in the fence, so they can be easily slid through.
- Grab 12 red traffic cones and sit them on top of the fence.
- Please do not leave until all equipment is ready to go through (goals) , under (weights) and over (bags) the fence.
Preparation : The Footwork curriculum makes TST what it is. So know the curriculum.
- You must know all FAPs, FFSs & FFPs (and main tech games) and be able to coach them.
- We need all TST players to be super smooth and fast when it comes to movement, footshapes and patterns.
We are not a 'moves' program.
We are a 'spacial awareness' program that develops touch, intelligence and speed of action.
- I want you to own your sessions (within the TST framework) as much as possible, and so I need you to be creative and come up with great exercises that both you and the players will enjoy.
- You will achieve this better if you control what you do and how you run the session (as long as it is within the TST framework).
TST session framework :
Look at the game as an exercise that requires 'touch and intelligence'. All coaching at TST is based around this.
Are you improving their touch? Are you improving their intelligence in tight spaces?
'Introduce it : Practice it : Race it : Move on'

All players must be involved at all times, unless
- A rotation which means 1 player has a rest (EG : 5 players in a 3v1 exercise is ok) or 1 team in a '3 team' winner stays 2v2 comp is ok.
- Never have 2 players sitting out at a time. You are asking for trouble.
- Never have queues.

Player behaviour
- The expectation is that players are here to learn.
- Any player not focusing on this, to the point that their behaviour is becoming a distraction for the other players, and inhibiting a coach's ability to coach, then they need to sit out for a while.
- Tell them they can come back in when they are ready to focus.
- If this doesn't work, then get them to sit out again (for longer), and again, until it gets to the point that you ask them to sit out permanently.
- I will deal with the fall out. I will talk to parents and we will make a decision about whether the player remains in the program.
- Poor player behaviour is unacceptable at TST.
- We would rather players, who are not at TST to learn, leave.
- Do not tolerate poor behavior.

Being a good TST coach requirements
- A great personality that connects with and motivates young players.
- A great understanding of football technique (especially footwork patterns) and football intelligence.
- Coach technique in a fun and interesting way that keeps players motivated and engaged with the long term process.
- Punctuality : Arrive on time (includes set up time) and do not leave early (help pack up).
- Look professional. Look like a top quality coach.
- Act professionally. Be reliable. If you know you will miss a session in a term, make this known at the start of term.
- To have read and abide by these sub-contract conditions (which are in force because coaches in the past have not always acted professionally).
Failure to meet these requirements means your position will not be renewed in future terms.
