Fundamental Footwork Patterns

The Basic Standard Footwork Model

offers 6 different ways the ball can be moved, 'relative to the way the player is facing'.

  • Forward
  • Lateral into an immediate change of direction
  • Lateral without an immediate change of direction
  • Fake lateral movement before going the other way
  • Turn
  • Bring the ball into the body but then change direction when moving away from the body.

Fundamental Footwork Patterns are derived using this Model :

For example ;

  • If a player wants to go forward : Pony (outside nudge touches) will do it.
  • If a player wants to go Lateral (only) : An Inside switch Outside will do it. +[Crab touches, single lateral touches]
  • If a player wants to fake lateral (but go the other way) : An Inside step Outside will do it. +[IhO, fOswO....].
  • If a player wants to go lateral but then immediately forward : An 'Inside Inside' or an 'Outside step Inside' will do it.
  • If a players wants to go in the opposite direction to the way they are facing : A Drag Turn will do it + [stop starts / double turns].
  • If a player wants to bring the ball towards them and then move in a different direction : A DBV will do it.

Six patterns (assuming they only need to do one thing) will ensure a player can go where ever they need to in this moment.

For a player on the ball, the game is simply a collection of moments like this. They way they face relative to the pressure may change in an instant and be constantly changing, and so the different pressure problems may come thick and fast (so the ability to switch from one FFP to another FFP needs to be seamless], but when this is broken down, it is this simple.
