Long Version

If i assess your session this is what i will use.

Personality :

 

How do you rate your greeting when players arrived (rate out if 10) ?

 

Did you do the following? Answer these (yes/no):

  • Did you act like you're really happy to see them?
  • Did you give them a really big welcome?
  • Did you give each player a big fist pump or a high 5?
  • Did you say something positive/friendly to the player when they arrived?.

 

How do you rate your general demeanor (rate out if 10) ?

 

Answer these (yes/no).

  • Were you super friendly?
  • Did you have and coach with high positive energy?
  • Did you feel that they fed off of your energy?
  • Were you animated in a friendly positive way whilst coaching?
  • Were you very positive towards all players?
  • Was your communication clear and positive?
  • Did the volume of your communication create a positive energy during the session?
  • Did you act like you were more excited to be there than they were?
  • Did you act like you were enjoying what you are doing more than they were?
  • Did you smile a lot during the session?
  • Did you laugh in a friendly way durng the session?
  • Did you make them smile at times?
  • Did you get excited when they did well?
  • Did you encourage them when they can do better?

 

Take responsibility for your session :

 

How focused were the players in your group during your session(rate out of 10) ?

 

Answer yes / no or add extra notes where necessary.

  • Were players focused throughout the sessions? If no :
  • What are you doing that may be causing this distraction?
    • Do you have queues in your exercises?
    • Do you give players opportunities to stand next to each other and talk?
    • Do you have flat spots in your exercises where players can disengage?
    • Are your drills boring or not working? If so why? What needs to change?
    • Are your tech games boring, too hard, too easy, not working (poor set up, management etc), and / or, do they offer periods where players can disengage?

 

Only if you have : Tweaked everything so that the footwork and tech games are perfect, and a player is still mucking about and losing focus, and being a distraction - then it may not be you.

 

When it is not you.

When you have followed every TST coaching tip to fix the issue and a player is still not on board. Then it needs to be brought to my attention. So I can assess the session and the player.

 

2. How do you rate your eession management (rate out of 10)?

 

Answer yes/ no.

  • Did you have queues?
  • Did you have dead stops (Waiting for their turn (especially next to someone else who is also waiting)?
  • Were players inactive / standing still at any time and this became an issue?
  • Were players active at all times, (other than when the coach allows a break) ?
  • Did Beginners have a ball at their feet for as much of the time as possible ?
  • Did the tech game match the player level ? [Beginners -> low pressure : Advanced -> High pressure[].

 

3. How do you rate your footwork component (rate out of 10) ?

  • Did you Build up the complexity in a way that worked for your players?
  • Did you get straight into the patterns (warm up) at the right level and build?
  • Did your warm up introduce all the patterns you did in the session?
  • Did you add competition into every part of the session, once the technique had been introduced, practiced and improved?
  • Did you have fun in this process?
  • Did you introduce the pattern names as you taught them?
  • Did you add intensity into the footwork?
  • Did you Maximize touches and repetition when doing cone work :
    • Did every player have their own space / row of cones / no more than 2 players per space/row.
    • Did you separate the spaces / rows of cones?
    • Did you add difficulty and progressions
    • Did you use the 'Introduce it .. .improve it.....race it.... move on' method' ?
    • Did you ensure the practice was deep practice?
    • Did you use the feedback cycle to help players improve?

 

3. How do you rate your work on 5 patterns (minimum) (rate out of 10)?

Relative to the way you are facing what 5 patterns did you work on in your session :

  • A pattern that moves the ball Laterally (_______________________)
  • A pattern that moves the ball forward. (_______________________)
  • A pattern that is a turn. (_______________________)
  • A pattern that is a V (_______________________)
  • A fake on any of the above. ( _______________________)

With absolute beginners did you do the following instead?

  • Right foot only.
  • Left foot only.
  • Inside only.
  • Outside only.
  • Turns. (which turn ____________________).
  • V (which V ____________________).

 

4. How do you rate your attempts to clearly show the development a player has made on a pattern during the session. (rate out of 10) ?

  • Did you give the player something they could use to assess improvement?
  • Did you use the level up method?

 

5. How do you rate your level and quality of the feedback you gave each player about their technique during the sessions (rate out of 10) ?

 

  • Did you add the feedback cycle to the 'Introduce it .. .improve it.....race it.... move on' method' ?
  • Was your feedback always presented positively, even if you are offering them advice on how to improve?
  • Were you constantly giving feedback (to someone) during the session?
  • Was the feedback tailored to the individual and their level?

 

Building Tech games

 

5. How do you rate your attempts to match the tech game to the level of the players (rate out of 10) ?

  • Did you build the tech games in terms of complexity?
  • Did you build in regards to pressure?

General tech game rules apply:

  • Were there Queues?
  • Was everyone involved at all times? (Having 1 player inactive might be ok but NO MORE!)
  • Did your tech games allow players to think about the space more than the 'footwork or scoring'?
  • Did each tech game have the right amount of space for the exercise?

 

Other key tech game management tips :

  • Were you always in a position to watch all players at all times?
  • If you had 2 different levels of players within one group, did you run 2 separate tech games for the 2 levels?
  • Did you make the tech game about technique (not physicality)?
  • Did you make the tech game competitive?
  • Did your 1v1s make sense?  Was it a game like? Was success achievable?
    • Did you use multiple goals so attackers had lots of choices?
    • Did you use mutliple goals that meant the defenders could not defend every goal?
    • Did you give an incentive in the transition moments (When possession changes)?

 

Small sided games :

  • Did you continue to communicate with a high level of positive energy during the games?
  • Did the weakest team get help from a coach and so still had a positive experience?
  • Did you step in and help a team, when they were getting whacked?
  • If you played, did you follow these rules : Restrict touches (Max 4) and can score with a first time finish only.
