The BSFM uses the 6 relative directions the ball can be moved to find footwork patterns to practice. In games the direction a player faces changes constantly, and pressure can come from all angles, sometime for multiple directions but his does not change the theory of the BSFM - i just means that solutions to problems are harder to get right.

The Basic Standard Footwork Model

The basic standard footwork model looks for footwork patterns that moved the ball (relative to the way the player is facing) in accordance with the objectives of this list:

  • Move the ball Laterally without an immediate change of direction
  • Move the ball laterally into an immediate change of direction
  • Fake moving the ball laterally before going the other way
  • Move the ball and body 180º [Turn]
  • Start a turn but then change direction before the turn is complete [Ball moves in a 'V" shape]
  • Move the ball forward
